B+W Study No. 1

I'm picking up where I left off a few months ago, with creating every day. But this time, I'm doing things a little differently.

I'm still creating patterns, but I want to do a more focused study. Perhaps it's the need for focus, or it could just be the beginning of the school year is in the air. Either way, let's try an experiment. Each month I'll focus on one theme. For August I happened to select 'Black and White: A Study'.

My drawing for 08.01.2013 is a simple one. It's a shape that I've been drawing since before high school. And it hasn't really changed much. Although, this one is a lined example, and is formed into a circle.

Experimentation

Recently, I've been experimenting with a concept called 'mark-making', which has turned into a bit of an art journal. I'm enjoying this process so much - it's the perfect end to a long day of my very detail-oriented day job. Here I just get to be free and not think too much. So cathartic.

I've found that my fave medium du jour is gouache paint and super heavy drawing paper (much cheaper than watercolor paper). It's similar to acrylic paint, but can be watered down significantly, in order to create a watercolor effect. It's really the best of both worlds.

I strongly encourage you to give it a go!
